Second Case Study

Bruno is a truck driver employed by a logistics company. He is 55 years old and has worked for the company for 16 years. He is known in the workplace as a bit of a larrikin and prankster.

One morning he sees the receptionist, Lorraine, walking past in the company car park and says to her “Lorraine, I want to show you something”. When she walks over, Bruno shows her a picture on his phone of two horses mating. When Lorraine see the picture she laughs and says “Yuk, you are gross, Bruno” and starts to walk off.Bruno calls after her “Sorry Lorraine only horsing around…!”. She turns and grins at him.

Bruno works with Khaled who was born in Lebanon and is a practicing Muslim. Sometimes talk in the workplace turns to the subject of ISIS.

During one of these discussions Bruno says in front of Khaled “bloody bacon haters…we should just nuke em!”. Khaled also dislikes ISIS but is offended by what Bruno said and complains to HR. HR counsel Bruno about his conduct and gives him a verbal warning about complying with the company’s workplace policies.

As Bruno leaves work that night, he sees Khaled on the way out. He walks up to Khaled, leans in close and says “you got a problem with me mate, you come to me about it. Next time you run off to dob to HR, I’ll fix you right up!”

That night Bruno gets on Facebook and posts that “A muslim dickhead at work dobbed me for commenting ‘bout the news. Makes me want to rip his bloody head off, then chew up and spit out his lifeless body!’”A couple of Bruno’s co-workers are his Facebook friends. One of them knows that Khaled was the person who complained about Bruno and tells Khaled about Bruno’s Facebook post.
